The Future of Quality Improvement
Quality improvement applies systematic methods to solving complex problems by involving frontline staff, testing ideas rigorously, and learning from data. When embedded over time, it can deliver significant organizational and system-wide benefits. However, inconsistent rigour often undermines results and confidence. Effective adoption requires sustained commitment, capacity-building, supportive culture, psychologically safe leadership, and robust infrastructure. Skilled improvers enable rigorous design, evaluation, and large-scale implementation, though scaling and spreading improvement remains challenging. Emerging insights from implementation science and the use of generative AI may accelerate improvement, provided risks are managed. Greater rigour is essential to achieve impact across all quality domains.
