Improving Child Health in North East London

Improving quality, equity and outcomes for babies, children and young people was set as one of four strategic priorities for the North East London Integrated Care System. To support this, a quality improvement programme was designed to translate strategic priorities into tangible, measurable improvements in care and outcomes. Supported by the East London NHS Foundation Trust’s Quality Improvement team, the programme applied proven improvement methodologies to address some of the system’s most complex challenges.

The work is described in the report below under three headings:

1.      Building will: more than 450 professionals from 30 organisations were engaged and equipped to identify and improve services for children and young people and their families.

2.      Building capability: Individuals and organisations across the system were equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to improve babies, children and young people’s services. The capability programme was designed as a two-part learning programme, delivered at venues across Northeast London. Building improvement capability enabled the system to deliver demonstrable benefits for children, young people and families.

3.      Building improvement:  improvement project teams came together regularly to understand the issues they aimed to address and test change ideas using QI methods. Key outcomes included

          i.        68% reduction in missed appointments for young people with diabetes

ii.       57.4% reduction in the number of children not brought to their clinic appointments at the Complications of Excess Weight service.

Overall, the programme represents a large-scale collaborative improvement effort, successfully mobilising the system at scale to deliver meaningful and sustainable change.
