Comic Spotlight: The Power of Local Tailoring

 24th September 2026

Created by Clarissa Sørlie

A hand-drawn comic titled “Same Hour, New Name: The power of local tailoring on Conolly ward.” The story is told across five panels. The first panel introduces the title. The second panel shows a staff member getting excited about a change idea called “Therapeutic Hour”. The third panel shows the idea being tested on the ward, where our staff member person holds a sad-looking “Therapeutic Hour” banner while others focus on completing paperwork. In the fourth panel, a person has an idea, represented by a lightbulb. The final, larger panel shows the initiative rebranded as “Hour of Fun,” with multiple people participating in activities and gathering around a table tennis table. The comic illustrates how a locally adapted version of a change idea evolved into a more engaging activity for people on the ward.

When the team on Conolly ward heard about the ‘Therapeutic Hour’ change idea, they were keen to introduce it to their ward. But it didn’t have the impact they hoped for. Staff used the time to catch up on paperwork, and the buzz of engagement was missing. So the team changed the name to ‘Hour of Fun’. And the ward loved it!

The impact of this simple change shows the importance of tailoring ideas to your local context, even if it’s been successful somewhere else.
