Our Head of Analytics Forid Alom gives us a masterclass in using QI Charts. For all your run and control chart needs!
One of the fundamental tools of quality improvement is to understand the variation in your process over time. This can be done using the following tools:
1. Run Chart Study variation in data over time; understand the impact of changes on measures.
2. Control (Stewhart) Chart Distinguish between special and common causes of variation.
The most efficient way to create run charts or control charts is to use specialist software. So to assist you in your improvement work we can provide you with access to QI charts on your computer with an Add In to Microsoft Excel. Please contact the QI Team (elft.qi@nhs.net) to get QI Charts installed on your machine.
Don’t forget that Life QI is the simplest way to create your Run and Control Charts!

How to interpret Control Charts?
A control chart (also known as a Shewhart chart) is a graph used to study how a system or process changes over time. Data is plotted in time order. A control chart always has a mean as the centre line, an upper control limit and a lower control limit which show where we would expect future data to lie within. Learn more in this resource.
